Jerry Reed 1937-2008

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Jerry Reed Hubbard died from emphysema and was in hospice care. Reed was a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and actor. He was 71.

Most of us will remember him for two things. First, the classic movie "Smokey and the Bandit" in which he was Cletus Snow... radio handle "Snowman." He also performed the theme song "East Bound and Down." He also was awarded a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1972 for "When You're Hot, You're Hot."

Jerry Reed was more than just that however. His first career charting song, "Guitar Man," was covered by Elvis Presley. Reed and Chet Atkins performed on 2 albums together, and made numerous appreances on "Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour."

"Redneck in a Rock & Roll Bar," "The Bird," "East Bound and Down" went to #2, "She Got the Goldmine (I Got The Shaft",) and "Lord, Mr Ford" both went to #1.

He acted in several movies as well. "Waterboy"and all 3 "Smokey and the Bandit" movies are a few.

Its a truly sad day for country music. We all miss his humor and talent. All the truckers show give a pull on the air horn for the Snowman....

Above, you will mind a small Amazon player where you can listen to clips of his music. Above that, additional links to clips and ordering information. For more information read this excellent article posted on the Tennessean website.
